Patrik Laine became the overtime hero with his second goal of the night, giving the Winnipeg Jets a 4-3 victory over the visiting Calgary Flames on Thursday night to kick off the season.

Laine, whose future with the team became a question mark due to a trade request, capped a three-point night when he elected to shoot during a two-on-one rush he created by going end-to-end. He hit the mark 78 seconds into the extra frame on assists from Neal Pionk and Kyle Connor.

Connor Hellebuyck made 23 saves to collect the win after his team erased a 3-1 deficit.

The Flames staked themselves to a two-goal lead with a strong first period.

Matthew Tkachuk put the visitors on the board at the 4:28 mark when he deflected a Rasmus Andersson point shot up and over the Jets goalie.

Seconds after Andersson came within a whisker of scoring, Laine tied the game at the 7:24 mark with a top-shelf wrist shot from the slot while on a breakaway, but Johnny Gaudreau again put the Flames ahead with a power-play tally exactly four minutes later.

Then, Elias Lindholm -- who set up Gaudreau with a seeing-eye pass on his team's second goal -- blasted a one-timer home to make it a 3-1 game with 3:32 remaining in the opening frame.

The Jets flipped the script with a dominating second period and drew even. Just 34 seconds into the period, Mark Scheifele pounced on a loose puck following a couple of Flames turnovers -- giving him a point in eight consecutive season openers -- and then Connor's five-on-three power-play goal with 4:56 remaining in the stanza evened the score.

Laine and Connor finished the night with three points while Lindholm had two.

Jacob Markstrom stopped 30 shots for the Flames, his biggest on Scheifele in the final minutes to force overtime -- a glove save after he turned over the puck.
