Blake Wheeler had a goal and four assists and Mark Scheifele added a goal and two assists to lead the Winnipeg Jets to a 5-2 victory over the visiting Colorado Avalanche on Friday night.

It was the first five-point game of Wheeler's career. Kyle Connor, Nikolaj Ehlers and Patrik Laine also scored for Winnipeg and Connor Hellebuyck finished with 28 saves as the Jets improved to 7-1-3 in their last 11 games.

Erik Johnson and Tyson Jost each scored goals for Colorado and Semyon Varlamov had 19 saves for the Avalanche, who lost their fifth straight game.

Winnipeg, playing its first game after a week-long layoff following a two-game split with the Florida Panthers in the NHL Global Series in Helsinki, Finland, did not show any rust, bolting out to a 2-0 lead in the first 14 minutes.

Connor started the scoring with a power-play goal, his seventh of the season, backhanding a shot in the slot inside the left post. It marked a franchise-record 11th straight game that the Jets scored a power-play goal.

Scheifele followed a little over three minutes later, one-timing a pass from Wheeler from a tough angle to the left of the goal for his seventh goal of the season.

Johnson cut it to 2-1 early in the third period with his first goal of the season, skating in from the right circle and then scooping a shot over Hellebuyck's left shoulder. But Ehlers put the Jets back up 3-1 a little over three minutes later when he backhanded in a shot from the left side of the net off a nice crossing pass from Wheeler to finish a two-on-one break.

After Colorado again closed to within a goal again on Jost's second goal of the season, Laine made it 4-2 with his eighth of the season and fifth in three games with a power-play goal. Wheeler then sealed the victory for the Jets with an empty-net goal with 1:26 to go.
