Capitals 4, Oilers 1: Captain Alex Ovechkin scored his league-leading 10th goal in as many games and Braden Holtby turned aside 30 shots as visiting Washington skated to its third straight victory.

Nicklas Backstrom joined Ovechkin with a goal and an assist while Edmonton native Jason Chimera and Joel Ward also tallied. Marcus Johansson notched a pair of assists for the Capitals, who defeated the Oilers for the second time this season while securing their second win in the last 10 trips to Edmonton.

Ovechkin continued his torrid pace by opening the scoring with 1:47 remaining in the first period. The three-time Hart Trophy winner spotted a loose puck after Backstrom won an offensive-zone draw and wired it past Devan Dubnyk (22 saves) for his fourth goal in three games.

Ward doubled the advantage by redirecting defenseman John Carlson's shot past Dubnyk with 4:25 left in the second period before Backstrom finished a brilliant tic-tac-toe play by scoring from the doorstep 1:24 into the third.

Defenseman Justin Schultz scored with 2:04 remaining in the third period to end Holtby's bid for his eighth career shutout and first this season.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Ovechkin also recorded a goal and an assist in Washington's 4-2 victory over Edmonton on Oct. 14. ... The Oilers failed on all three power-play opportunities to fall to 0-for-18 in their last six contests.
