Islanders 5, Capitals 2: John Tavares reached the 100-goal plateau after scoring on a pair of third-period power plays to lift host New York to its third win in four games.

Tavares drew a high-sticking penalty and capitalized on the ensuing opportunity to give the Islanders a 3-2 lead with 7:47 remaining in the third. The former top overall pick scored again 30 seconds later as New York closed out its season-high seven-game homestand by earning points in their fifth straight contest.

Frans Nielsen had a goal and an assist, rookie Casey Cizikas and Josh Bailey also scored and Evgeni Nabokov made 22 saves for New York. Mathieu Perreault and Nicklas Backstrom tallied for Washington and Philipp Grubauer stopped 40 shots in his first career start.

With the score tied 2-2, Washington’s Mike Ribeiro was called for high-sticking and received an extra two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct after arguing with officials. Tavares scored the go-ahead goal on the second half of Ribeiro’s double-minor after firing a rebound past a diving Grubauer.

Nielsen, who assisted on Bailey’s goal to open the scoring, netted a short-handed tally with 3:01 remaining in the game. The Capitals were outshot 19-5 in the final 20 minutes as they saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Capitals D John Erskine left the game early with an upper-body injury and did not return. … New York finished 2-for-6 on the power play, marking the seventh time this season that it has recorded multiple goals with the man advantage. ... Officials initially waved off Tavares’ second goal after reasoning that the puck had hit the crossbar. The action continued until Matt Moulson scored later on the same power play. After Moulson’s goal, video review confirmed Tavares had scored and the game was reset to that moment.
