Fifth-seeded California kept its NCAA tournament hopes alive surviving a scare by No. 12 seed Oregon State, winning 67-62 Wednesday in a first round game of the Pac-12 tournament in Las Vegas.

The Golden Bears, led by Jabari Bird's 20 points, improved to 20-11. They play No. 4 seed Utah in a quarterfinal game Thursday. Ivan Rabb achieved a double-double (12 points and 13 rebounds) and Stephen Domingo added 10 points.

Oregon State ends its season 5-27. The Beavers were led by Stephen Thompson Jr.'s 25-point effort that included 5 of 6 shooting from 3-point range.

The game was evenly matched throughout despite Cal winning the last matchup 76-46 in Berkeley, Calif., two weeks ago. Cal swept the regular-season series, also winning 69-58 at Corvallis, Ore., on Jan. 21.

Both teams had an eight-point lead as their largest margin. There were three ties and three lead changes.

Matt Dahlen, who made a layup in Oregon State's previous possession, made one of two free throw attempts to cut the lead to 57-55 with 2:20 left in regulation.

After Rabb answered with two free throws, Dahlen went baseline and made a layup on the other end to cut the lead to 59-57.

After each team missed a 3-point attempt, Bird made a breakaway layup and was fouled. His free throw to convert the 3-point play gave the Golden Bears a 62-57 lead with 53 seconds left.

Oregon State missed on its next two possessions and free throws by Bird and Kingsley Okoroh helped secure the win.

California was unable to pull away after taking a 47-39 lead with 10:33 left in regulation following a 3-pointer by Bird.

A 3-pointer by JaQuori McLaughlin and two free throws by Kendal Manuel on consecutive possessions cut the lead to 47-44 with 9:22 remaining.

California out-rebounded Oregon State 40-27 and outscored the Beavers 22-14 in points in the paint. The Bears' reserves outscored Oregon State's bench 17-5.
