Adam Flagler and Jonathan Tchamwa Tchatchoua combined to score 27 points off the bench to lift second-ranked Baylor to an 83-52 victory over visiting Stephen F. Austin on Wednesday in Waco, Texas.
Flagler scored 11 of his 14 points in the first half for the Bears (4-0), who had not played since beating Illinois 82-69 on Dec. 2. Flagler came off the bench to score a team-high 18 points in that contest.
Tchamwa Tchatchoua made 5 of 6 shots from the floor to finish with 13 points. Jared Butler scored 12 points, Davion Mitchell added 11 and Matthew Mayer had 10 as Baylor worked through rust after seeing its schedule altered over the last week.
The Bears' anticipated showdown against top-ranked Gonzaga on Saturday was postponed due to a COVID-19 situation within the Bulldogs' program. Baylor's initially scheduled encounter versus Nicholls State on Wednesday was also called off due to a positive COVID-19 test within the Colonels' program.
Cameron Johnson had 11 points and Southland Conference Player of the Week Gavin Kensmil added 10 for the Lumberjacks (3-1), who made just 1 of 9 shots from 3-point range and 15 of 27 from the free-throw line. Stephen F. Austin committed 35 turnovers to put itself on the fast track toward its first loss of the season.
Baylor bolted out of the blocks as Flagler drained a 3-pointer and drove for a layup to highlight an early 12-2 run.
While that surge gave the Bears a 16-8 lead, they found their stroke from beyond the arc to secure a 38-22 advantage at halftime. LJ Cryer, Mayer and Flagler each made a 3-pointer to score the final nine points of the first half.
Baylor didn't miss a beat following intermission, with Mitchell and Butler connecting from beyond the arc to extend its advantage to 46-25.
Tchamwa Tchatchoua's three-point play ignited a 15-2 run to effectively put the game away. The surge gave Baylor a 69-38 lead on Stephen F. Austin, which was unable to duplicate its second-half magic in its 97-79 win over LSU Alexandria.
