Dimitri Batten scored 16 of his career-high 23 points in the second half as Old Dominion snapped a nine-game losing streak by dispatching of Virginia in the Governor’s Holiday Hoops Classic at Richmond, Va.

The Monarchs (2-10) trailed 34-24 with under 14 1/2 minutes remaining before Batten scored 14 points during a 20-4 run that helped halt the Cavaliers’ eight-game winning streak. Aaron Bacote added 17 points for Old Dominion.

Joe Harris scored 18 points and Evan Nolte added 15 for Virginia (9-3). Harris lost control of the ball in the final seconds and was unable to get off a last-second shot.

Batten made a career-best five 3-pointers and his fourth and final one of the second half gave the Monarchs a 44-38 advantage with 8:24 remaining. Donte Hill’s layup made it 50-41 with 5:49 left before Virginia rallied to cut its deficit to 57-54 on a 3-pointer by Nolte with 34 seconds left.

A three-point play by Nolte pulled the Cavaliers within one point with 21.4 seconds left before Bacote made two free throws and Hill sank three to help the Monarchs hold on.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Old Dominion played without freshman PG Keenan Palmore (concussion) and senior F Nick Wright (flu). … Both teams made nine 3-pointers and nearly shot the same percentage from the field – the Cavaliers shot 40.4 percent and the Monarchs shot 40. … The game was nearly 12 minutes old before Virginia led for the first time. The Cavaliers led by as many as nine in the first half before taking a 25-20 halftime lead.
