Trey Burke scored 27 points and Tim Hardaway Jr. added 25 points as the Wolverines topped the Mountaineers in the Brooklyn Hoops Winter Festival.

In the first meeting between the two schools, Michigan (11-0) raced to a 19-4 lead in the game’s first five minutes. Burke scored eight points during the surge, and 3-pointers from Hardaway and Nik Stauskas helped the Wolverines build the big advantage.

Terry Henderson scored 23 points to lead the Mountaineers (4-5). West Virginia cut a 15-point deficit with eight minutes left to 71-64 on Henderson’s 3-pointer with 4:31 remaining, but drew no closer.

Hardaway finished 4-for-8 from 3-point range. Burke shot 12-of-16 from the field and finished with eight assists, as Michigan shot 56 percent from the field.

Juwan Staten scored 12 points for West Virginia, which has lost four of its past seven.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Michigan coach John Beilein defeated West Virginia in his first game against the Mountaineers, whom he coached to 104 victories from 2003-07. … The Wolverines are 11-0 for the first time since winning the national championship in 1988-89. … Eron Harris scored 10 points off the bench for West Virginia.
