Freshman center Przemek Karnowski scored 22 points to lead six players in double figures as the host Bulldogs cruised to the season-opening victory.

Guy Landry Edi scored 16 points and Sam Dower added 15 for Gonzaga, which led 44-27 at halftime and was never threatened by the Thunderbirds from the Big Sky Conference.

The 7-foot-1, 305-pound Karnowski made an impressive debut, shooting 10-for-16 from the field and collecting three rebounds. David Stockton and Elias Harris had 12 points apiece and Kevin Pangos added 10 for the Bulldogs.

Jackson Stevenett had a career-high 29 points on 11-of-15 shooting for the Thunderbirds, who were 4-for-17 from 3-point range. Southern Utah committed 28 turnovers, while Gonzaga had nine.

Gonzaga, which had its run of 11 straight West Coast Conference regular-season titles snapped last year, shot 54.8 percent from the field. Landry Edi and Harris led the Bulldogs on the boards with seven apiece.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The game marked the head coaching debut of Southern Utah’s Nick Robinson, who spent the past three years as an assistant at LSU. … Gonzaga forward Kelly Olynyk missed the first of three games for a violation of the school’s student code of conduct. … Southern Utah shot 49.1 percent (27-for-55) from the field. … Karnowski made only two of his seven free-throw attempts.
