Virginia Tech 68, Clemson 63: Erick Green scored 24 points and the Hokies prevailed in another close matchup with Tigers in the first round of the ACC tournament.

Dorenzo Hudson added 19 points for 10th-seeded Virginia Tech (16-16), which ended a four-game losing streak and advances to face second-seeded Duke on Friday night in the quarterfinals. The Hokies have made a habit of living on the NCAA tournament bubble in recent seasons, but need to win the ACC tournament in order to reach the NCAAs this year.

Virginia Tech took the first step toward that goal by grabbing control with a 9-0 spurt that gave it a 61-52 lead with 2:21 left. Hudson and Green hit back-to-back 3-pointer during the run, which was aided by flagrant foul on Clemson big man Devin Booker for an elbow to the face.

Clemson (16-15) clawed back to within 66-63 on a 3-pointer from Milton Jennings with 17 seconds left, but Green hit a pair of free throws to seal it. Devin Coleman scored 15 points and Andre Young added 13 for the seventh-seeded Tigers.

To no one’s surprise, it was another nail-biter in a series full of them. Since Virginia Tech joined the ACC in 2004, 11 of the 13 meetings have been decided by five points or less.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Green was visibly fatigued often in the first half as Clemson sent multiple defenders his way. … The Tigers, who went 0 for 10 from beyond the arc in the last meeting, hit five 3-pointers in the first half.
