C.J. Leslie led the way with 17 points as North Carolina State came back from an 18-point deficit to beat Texas 77-74 on Monday in the TicketCity Legends Classic in East Rutherford, N.J.
Scott Wood added 16 points off the bench for the Wolfpack (4-1), who scored 33 points at the free throw line.
Texas led 65-47 and looked ready to run away with the game after Julien Lewis buried the second of back-to-back 3-pointers with 11:50 left.
But the Longhorns would not make another field goal for the next 9:07 as the Wolfpack slowly worked their way back into the game.
Texas star guard J‘Covan Brown was called for a personal foul and a technical with 8:25 left, fouling himself out of the game.
N.C. State took advantage as Wood and Leslie each drained a pair of free throws. The Wolfpack continued to surge forward, and took the lead for good 69-67 on DeShawn Painter’s jumper with 5:29 left.
The run ended up being 28-2 before Sheldon McClellan converted a three-point play to get the Longhorns back on the board.
Texas showed enough fight to get it back to a one-possession game, and had two chances to tie it in the final 10 seconds but could not hit a 3-pointer.
