MIAMI 78, NO. 16 FLORIDA STATE 62: Durand Scott scored 17 points and Kenny Kadji added 15 as the host Hurricanes shook off a slow start and enhanced their NCAA hopes.

The Hurricanes were without starting center Reggie Johnson, who was declared ineligible before the game. But Miami (17-10, 8-6 ACC), which had lost three of its last four, got at least six points from seven players and forced 20 turnovers.

Shane Larkin pitched in with 13 points and Trey McKinney Jones added 11 for Miami.

Michael Snaer had 20 points to lead Florida State (19-9, 10-4), which pulled within 65-58 with 2:39 remaining but could not get closer.

Florida State led by as many as seven in the opening 20 minutes, but Miami finished it with a 13-2 run – seven by Scott – for a 24-20 halftime lead. The Hurricanes started the second half with a 20-10 burst.

The school said in a statement that “in the process of an ongoing NCAA-UM inquiry, it was discovered that members of Johnson’s family received impermissible travel benefits” from a former member of the coaching staff. Johnson, averaging 10.6 points and 6.9 rebounds, will seek reinstatement.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Florida State still leads the series, 39-29. … Miami is 12-3 at its home court, the BankUnited Center. … Florida State dropped to 4-3 on the road in the ACC.
