NO. 17 LOUISVILLE 57, PITTSBURGH 54: Russ Smith delivered a game-high 18 points off the bench, including 11 straight during a second-half stretch, and the host Cardinals withstood a late rally by the Panthers.
Kyle Kuric added 17 points, and Peyton Siva scored 11 points with five rebounds and five assists for Louisville (22-7, 10-6 Big East).
Sophomore reserve J.J. Moore followed up a career-high 21 points in Sunday's loss to South Florida with a team-high 16 points against Louisville, his third straight game in double figures. Nasir Robinson chipped in eight points and 11 boards for Pitt (15-14, 4-12), which dropped its fifth straight.
The teams went back and forth early in the second half, before the Cardinals took command with a 10-1 burst. Chane Behanan's layup made it 49-41 with 7:31 to go.
But Pitt again fought back, cutting it to 53-52 on Dante Taylor's dunk with 31 seconds left. Behanan, who missed the front end of a one-and-one moments earlier, buried a pair of free throws with 13 ticks remaining. After a Pitt layup, Siva made two more foul shots, and Ashton Gibbs' last-second 3-pointer misfired.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Six different Panthers accounted for their first six field goals of the game. … Louisville had just three turnovers in the second half after committing 11 in the first half. … Only five Cardinals scored.
