Peyton Siva led five players in double figures with 16 points and No. 25 Louisville posted a 84-74 victory over visiting Villanova on Wednesday.
Kyle Kuric and freshman Chane Behanan each added 14 points for Louisville (16-5, 4-4 Big East), which has won two straight for the first time since late December.
Maalik Wayns scored 19 points while playing through foul trouble, and James Bell added 14 points and 13 rebounds for Villanova (10-11, 3-6). The young Wildcats were seeking to win three straight for the first time since mid-November, but came apart when Wayns picked up his third and fourth fouls six seconds apart early in the second half.
The Big East’s second-leading scorer headed to the bench with Villanova holding a 44-42 with just over 18 minutes left. Louisville then proceeded to outscore the Wildcats 17-9 over the next eight minutes with Wayns, who had averaged 30.7 points over the previous three games, looking on helplessly. The junior returned and promptly scored five points during a 9-2 run that got the Wildcats back within striking range.
But after Villanova pulled to within 67-65 with just over four minutes left, the Cardinals responded with an 11-4 run. Jared Swopshire’s 3-pointer capped the spurt and made it 78-69 with 1:13 left. Wayns hit a 3 with less than a minute left, but the Cardinals hit six of their next eight free throws to seal it.
