Robbie Hummel had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and connected on two clinching free throws with 12.9 seconds remaining to lift Purdue to a 79-76 victory over host Iowa on Wednesday in the Big Ten opener for both.

Hummel, who has notched two straight double-doubles and has 16 in his career, scored 11 points in the second half and moved into 20th on Iowa's all-time scoring list.

Purdue (11-3) jumped out to a nine-point lead early in the second half only to see Iowa (8-6) tie the game on a couple occasions, but the Boilermakers never surrendered the lead.

Purdue, which blew double digits leads in losses to Xavier and Butler earlier this month, used strong bench play led by D.J. Byrd to win its second conference road opener at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in the last three years.

Byrd scored a season-high 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting and hit double digits for the second straight game. Kelsey Barlow, who made a key driving layup to put the Boilermakers up 77-72 with 19.4 seconds left, added 12.

The Hawkeyes, which had a three-game winning streak halted, were led by Roy Devyn Marble's 17 points. Melsahn Basabe chipped in 14 points and eight rebounds while Matt Gatens added 11.
