J’Covan Brown scored 23 points, and Texas held Nicholls State without a field goal for more than 15 minutes in a dominating 93-40 victory Tuesday night in Austin.

Jaylen Bond added 18 points and 12 rebounds off the bench for the Longhorns (8-2), who went on a 16-3 run over the last five minutes of the first half to take a commanding 53-30 halftime lead.

Bond, a freshman, hadn’t scored more than six points in any game this season but had 10 in the first half on perfect 5-of-5 shooting from the field.

As good as Texas was in the first half, it was even better after the break in holding the Colonels to just 10 points.

Nicholls State (3-7) went without a field goal from the 2:02 mark of the first half to the 6:25 mark in the second. The Colonels missed their first 17 shots of the second half and only mustered five points from the free throw line while falling behind 81-34.

The Longhorns’ lead swelled to 50 points on a Sterling Gibbs 3-pointer that made it 88-38 with 4:03 remaining.

Texas, now 2-0 all-time against Nicholls State, scored 25 points off 20 turnovers and won the rebounding battle 52-28.

Bryan Hammond scored nine points — all in the first half — to lead the Colonels, who were playing back-to-back nights after beating Louisiana-Monroe on Monday.
