College of Charleston held off a second-half charge from Clemson and escaped Littlejohn Coliseum with a 72-69 victory Saturday, only the Cougars' second win in 11 meetings with their in-state rival.

The Cougars (3-0) never trailed en route to their first 3-0 start since 2002, getting a game-high 22 points from Antwaine Wiggins and 15 apiece from Trent Wiedeman and Andrew Lawrence. They led 39-24 at halftime.

The Tigers (2-1) rallied for a 66-59 win last year in Charleston, and they threatened to pull off another comeback. Clemson pulled within two with 1:18 left, but Anthony Stitt hit one of two free throws and Andre Young's 3-point attempt in the final seconds misfired.

Young was 2 of 9 from 3-point range, giving him at least one 3-pointer in 37 of his past 38 games.

The Cougars scored 40 of their 72 points in the paint and shot 51.7 percent from the field. Clemson had held its first two opponents below 31 percent shooting and to an average of 47 points.

Devin Booker led Clemson with 16 points and 14 rebounds for his third career double-double.

Clemson dropped to 43-4 in non-conference home games since 2006.
