CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Sophomore forward John Henson scored a career-high 28 points, including 20 in the first half, to spark No. 2 seed North Carolina to a 102-87 win over pesky No. 15 seed Long Island in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Friday.

Tyler Zeller led the Tar Heels with 32 points, and Harrison Barnes added 24 points and 16 rebounds as North Carolina (27-7) shot 50.7 percent from the field to pull away from Long Island.

Julian Boyd had 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Blackbirds (27-6), who were making their first NCAA appearance since 1997.

The Tar Heels will play Washington on Sunday in the Round of 32.

North Carolina jumped out to a double-digit lead before Long Island's Jamal Olasewere scored five straight points to spark an 11-0 run that tied the game at 33 with 5:01 left before halftime. But North Carolina ended the half with a flourish as Barnes scored 12 points in the final 4:30 to give North Carolina a 53-42 halftime lead.

Long Island closed to within 10 points late in the second half, but North Carolina used a 52-36 rebounding advantage, including 11 by Henson, to overcome 19 turnovers and secure its first NCAA tournament win since the 2009 national championship game.
