Marquette shot 54 percent in the first half and knocked down 13 of 15 free throws in jumping out to a 42-31 lead at the break. Kris Joseph kept the Orange in it with 13 in the first half, but the Golden Eagles scored the last four points of the period to push the lead to double digits.

Syracuse slowly chipped away in the second half, finally pulling even at 56-56 when Scoop Jardine capped a 10-3 run with a layup at the 8:18 mark. The Orange would tie it twice more but were never able to take the lead, falling behind for good when Butler drained a 3-pointer to put Marquette up 69-66 with 1:53 remaining.
