Marshon Brooks scored 20 of his game-high 27 points in the second half as Providence ended its 17-game losing streak against Big East teams with a 72-67 victory over visiting No. 15 Louisville Saturday.

The Friars (12-8, 1-6 Big East), who broke a six-game losing streak, won their first game against a league opponent since Jan. 27, 2010 against Connecticut.

Brooks, sixth in the nation in scoring, was held to 1 of 6 from the field and seven points in the first half, but made two 3-pointers in the first 1:01 of the second half.

Brooks made 6 of 8 shots in the second half, including a 3-pointer that put Providence ahead for good 64-61 with 3:25 left. Brooks did not make his first field goal until there were 52 seconds left in the first half.

Gerard Coleman had 14 of his 19 points in the first half for the Friars and Vincent Council had 12, including two clutch baskets in the final two minutes of the game.

Chris Smith led Louisville (15-4, 4-2) with a career-high 19 points and seven rebounds. Stephan Van Treese was 5 for 5 for 10 points, all in the first half for the Cardinals.

Louisville led by as much as eight in the first half, but settled for a 43-39 halftime lead.
