Dane Miller tied a season high with 17 points and added 10 rebounds as Rutgers defeated host Seton Hall 66-60 Saturday for its second straight win.

It was the first meeting in this New Jersey rivalry for both coaches—Rutgers’ Mike Rice and Seton Hall’s Kevin Willard. Rice’s Scarlet Knights (12-7, 3-4 Big East) emerged victorious by dominating the Pirates (8-12, 2-6 Big East) on the boards. The Knights outrebounded Seton Hall 22-11 in the first half and, at one point in the second half, had a plus-16 edge in rebounding.

Rutgers took a 21-10 lead midway through the first half and never relinquished the lead. Rutgers almost squandered its advantage, however, going 5 of 14 from the line in the final three minutes until Miller made three straight to close out the win.

Rutgers’ Jonathan Mitchell added 14 points for his third straight game in double digits to go with nine rebounds, and freshman Gilvydas Biruta totaled 12 points and 11 boards for his second collegiate double-double.

Jeremy Hazell, Seton Hall’s leading scorer, tallied 10 of his 15 points in the second half and struggled from the field by hitting just 6-of-21 shots. Before fouling out, Herb Pope totaled 15 points and 16 boards for his third double-double in a span of five games and his fifth of the season.
