A practical game plan for Rutgers would be trying its best to stop Providence’s Marshon Brooks and limiting the damage from the rest of the Friars.

The Scarlet Knights (10-5, 1-2 Big East) did just that in Saturday’s 85-72 win over Providence. They are now 8-13 in the all-time series but, more importantly, earned their first Big East win of the season.

They allowed a game-high 29 points on 8-of-18 shooting to Brooks, who entered averaging more than 23 points. The rest of the Friars shot 12 of 47 (25.5 percent). Providence (11-6, 0-4) also finished 6 of 22 (27.3 percent) from 3-point range.

Forward Jonathan Mitchell led Rutgers with 21 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, his second of the season. The Scarlet Knights had three other players score double digits as they finished 31 of 57 (54.4 percent).

Rutgers held a huge advantage inside, outscoring Providence 46-26 in the paint.
