Travon Woodall's 3-pointer with 35 seconds remaining gave Pittsburgh the lead for good and sparked the No. 5 Panthers to an 83-79 win over host Providence in a Big East game Tuesday night.

The Friars trailed by 10 points in the second half but got even at 73-73 on a layup by Kadeem Batts. Marshon Brooks' 3-pointer with 1:31 to play gave Providence a 76-73 lead.

After a Pittsburgh basket by Gary McGhee and a Providence turnover, Woodall's 3-pointer from the top of the key with 37 seconds left put the Panthers ahead. Woodall added four free throws as Pitt put the game away at the foul line.

Gilbert Brown led Pitt (14-1, 2-0 Big East) with 19 points off the bench. He scored 17 in the first half. Brown missed only one shot in the half and hit six field goal tries, including five 3-pointers. McGee added 13 points for Pittsburgh.

Brown went to the bench with his fourth foul at the 12:31 mark and Pitt leading 52-48. The Panthers increased the lead to 10 points on two occasions, but Providence rallied. Brown returned to the game with 4:46 remaining, but didn't score again.

Brooks scored 28 points for Providence (11-5, 0-3). Vincent Council added 13.
