Jimmer Fredette had 25 points and nine assists and Jackson Emery scored 23 points as No. 23 Brigham Young defeated visiting Texas-El Paso 89-68 on Thursday. Emery made a career-best six 3-point baskets as BYU (12-1) overcame an 11-point, first-half deficit and snapped the Miners’ six-game winning streak.

Christian Polk and Claude Britten scored 15 points apiece for UTEP (9-3).

UTEP took a 17-6 lead six minutes into the contest before BYU outscored the Miners 33-9 the rest of the half to take a 39-26 halftime lead.

Fredette made four 3-point field goals as BYU connected on 12-of-27 3-point attempts. Brandon Davies added 15 points for the Cougars.

UTEP leading scorer Randy Culpepper had just four points on 1-of-8 shooting. It was the second straight season in which the Miners’ star struggled against the Cougars. Culpepper made just 2-of-15 shots and scored 10 points in last year’s meeting.
