Senior forward Gary Flowers scored 28 points Sunday, including a game-winning jump shot with 3.7 seconds left, and visiting Southern Miss beat Cal, 80-78.

Flowers scored the last 12 points for Southern Miss (6-1), which trailed by four with 1:14 left. Josimar Ayarza and LaShay Page added 17 and 12, respectively.

Harper Kamp scored 20 points and Nigel Carter added a career-high 16 points (including four 3-pointers) off the bench for Cal (5-4). Jorge Gutierrez (10 points) missed a 25-foot shot at the buzzer that would've given Cal the win.

Southern Miss led 41-40 at halftime, and both teams dealt with foul trouble throughout the game. Southern Miss was 25-of-29 (86.2 percent) from the line, while Cal made 26-of-34 (76.5 percent), but missed two free throws in the final 45 seconds.

Cal senior forward Markhuri Sanders-Frison, nursing plantar fasciitis in both feet, finished with seven points before fouling out with 1:14 remaining, just as Flowers began to carry Southern Miss to the win. Flowers shot 10-of-16 from the field, including two 3-pointers.
