Demetri McCarney scored 30 points, and No. 17 Illinois used a 16-0 run and a stifling defense in the second half to topple visiting Oakland 74-63 Wednesday.

The Illini (9-1) shot 31 percent from the floor in the first half as Oakland (5-4) built an 11-point lead – the largest deficit Illinois has faced this season. The Illini narrowed the deficit to 28-24 at halftime, and took the lead on a three-point play by McCarney with 14:59 left.

McCarney was 10 for 18 from the field. Guard D.J. Richardson scored 16 points as Illinois secured its 17th straight regular season home win over a non-conference opponent.

Oakland averaged more than 90 points in its previous four games, but the Illini defense tightened in the second half, and held Oakland to 5-of-25 shooting from 3-point range.

Reggie Hamilton had 18 points and seven rebounds, and Will Hudson added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Golden Grizzlies.
