Casey Mitchell finished 8-of-11 from the floor and 10-of-11 from the line for 27 points, leading West Virginia to a 71-50 victory over American University on Wednesday in Morgantown.

Kevin Jones added 16 points for the Mountaineers (5-1), whose lone loss this season came against No. 13 Minnesota in the finals of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off tournament.

Mitchell was on fire in the first half, pouring in 14 points to help West Virginia take a 32-20 lead at the break. He had six points during a game-opening 20-6 burst while Darryl Bryant had seven. Jones capped the rally with a 3-pointer.

Mitchell was fouled on a layup and converted the three-point play early in the second half, stretching the Mountaineers’ lead to a commanding 44-26.

West Virginia travels to Miami on Saturday for one of two remaining road games during the pre-conference slate. The Mountaineers are on the road for three of their first four in the Big East.

Vlad Moldoveanu scored 19 points to lead American (5-2), which has dropped two in a row after opening with five consecutive victories.
