A blistering first-half launched Miami (Fla.) to its third consecutive victory Tuesday.
The Hurricanes built a huge lead and rolled to an 86-73 victory over Ole Miss at the BankUnited Center.
The game wasn’t nearly as close as the final score would indicate. Miami (5-2) broke open the game in the first half, smothering the Rebels in building a 57-27 halftime advantage. The Hurricanes scored the game’s first six points, then took off with an 18-4 run capped by Adrian Thomas’ 3-point jumper seven minutes in, pushing the lead to 38-13.
The Hurricanes shot 50 percent, holding the Rebels (3-2) to 42 percent shooting
Durand Scott led Miami with 27 points on 7-of-10 shooting. He hit 12-of-13 attempts from the free-throw line. Reggie Johnson finished with 17 points. Thomas hit five 3-pointers – three in the game’s first nine minutes – and finished with 17 points.
Down 71-41 with 14 minutes left, Ole Miss made the final score respectable. The Rebels closed to within 79-70 with 3:10 to play, but Miami scored six of the next seven points to ice the win.
Chris Warren, Ole Miss’ leading scorer, did not score for the first 16 minutes. He scored 18 of his team-high 23 points in the second half. Zach Graham added 19 points off the bench.
The Hurricanes play host to West Virginia on Saturday. Ole Miss returns home to face Southern Mississippi.
