Nationals 6, Marlins 1: Bryce Harper returned to the lineup and contributed four hits to help visiting Washington take two out of three in the series.

Kurt Suzuki had two hits, including a home run, and drove in two runs, while Adam LaRoche and Stephen Lombardozzi each contributed two hits and an RBI for the Nationals. Ross Detwiler (1-0) allowed one run in seven innings while scattering seven hits and striking out six for his third straight quality start.

The Nationals used solid situational hitting to score their first two runs in the second inning. After leadoff singles by LaRoche and Ian Desmond – followed by Desmond’s stolen base to put runners on second and third – Roger Bernadina brought home a run on a grounder and Suzuki plated another on a sacrifice fly.

Suzuki led off the fifth with a home run off Marlins starter Ricky Nolasco, capping an eight-pitch at-bat by slamming a full-count fastball over the visiting bullpen in left for a 3-0 lead. Nolasco (0-2) pitched six innings, allowing four runs and seven hits while striking out six.

Detwiler gave up back-to-back singles to start the second and a two-out double in the third but escaped further damage. The Marlins pushed across a run in the fifth when Chris Valaika led off with a single and came home on a two-out single from Donovan Solano.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Harper returning after missing Tuesday’s game with the flu and Nationals OF Denard Span sat out his second straight game with the same ailment. Washington 2B Danny Espinosa missed his third straight game with a wrist injury. … Miami OF Giancarlo Stanton missed his sixth consecutive game with a shoulder injury, but has been taking batting practice and expects to be back in the lineup Thursday against the Cincinnati Reds. … Marlins OF Austin Kearns had two hits to end a 0-for-11 start to the season.
