Angels 6, White Sox 2: Erick Aybar drove in three runs to help host Los Angeles earn a split of the four-game series against Chicago.

Angels starter Jason Vargas (3-3) threw seven shutout innings, allowing four hits to lower his ERA to 3.55 after it was as high as 6.75 a month ago. Howie Kendrick added two hits, including a two-run double in the eighth that gave the Angels a 6-1 lead.

Chicago second baseman Jeff Keppinger had two hits and was robbed of a third on a diving catch by Angels center fielder Mike Trout, and Alex Rios extended his hitting streak to 14 games with an RBI double in the eighth. White Sox right-hander Jake Peavy (5-2) threw six innings, allowing four runs, four hits and walking a season-high five to end a personal four-game winning streak.

Chris Iannetta walked to lead off the third and advanced to third when No. 9 hitter J.B. Shuck followed by lacing a two-strike single to center off the glove of a charging Alejandro De Aza. Aybar then drove a two-run double down the right field line for a 2-0 lead.

Peavy walked the leadoff batter again in the fourth inning. Kendrick followed with a single and Peavy walked three more batters in the inning to force in two runs for a 4-0 lead.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Angels claimed INF Chris Nelson off waivers from the New York Yankees and sent 3B Luis Jimenez to Triple-A Salt Lake. Nelson started eight games at third base for the Yankees this month after Eduardo Nunez (ribs) went on the disabled list. … Iannetta’s run-scoring walk in the fourth inning was his sixth walk in the last two games. … Peavy was trying for his first five-game winning streak since winning six in a row from September 2007 to April 2008 with the San Diego Padres.
