Orioles 4, Tigers 2: Chris Davis belted his major league-leading 20th home run and Nate McLouth delivered a go-ahead RBI single to cap a three-run seventh inning as host Baltimore rallied to take two of three from Detroit.
Danny Valencia drove in the tying run in the bottom half of the seventh with a single after Brian Matusz (2-0) gave up a run in his only inning of work on Jhonny Peralta’s RBI single in the top half. Darren O’Day tossed a scoreless eighth and closer Jim Johnson worked around a leadoff single in the ninth for his 18th save.
Rick Porcello (2-3) yielded only three hits over his first six frames, but saw his 16-inning scoreless streak snapped when he allowed Davis’ homer and a pair of singles to open the seventh. Phil Coke came on in relief and surrendered the tying and go-ahead runs before getting out of the inning.
Prince Fielder accounted for the only run over the first six innings with his second homer in as many games. Peralta’s second single of the contest stretched the Tigers’ advantage to 2-0.
Porcello, who did not allow a baserunner past second through six innings, gave up Davis’ solo shot on his first pitch of the seventh and quickly yielded singles to Chris Dickerson and J.J. Hardy before departing. After Valencia and McLouth reached Coke for two more singles, Alexi Casilla added an RBI double in the eighth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Kevin Gausman, making his third major-league start, allowed one run and five hits over six innings. The right-hander, who struggled mightily over his first two outings, lowered his ERA from 11.00 to 7.20. … Detroit fell to 5-20 in games in which it scores four or fewer runs. … The Orioles won for the ninth time in 13 contests while the Tigers have dropped five of six.
