Diamondbacks 8, Cubs 2:
Trevor Cahill came within two outs of a shutout and Justin Upton homered as host Arizona clinched a series win over Chicago.

Aaron Hill went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs and Mike Jacobs drove in a run for the Diamondbacks (80-78), who moved within two wins of clinching a second consecutive winning campaign.

Justin Germano (2-10) had another rough start for the Cubs, who have dropped seven in a row. The journeyman right-hander was charged with seven runs on 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings to suffer his eighth consecutive loss.

Cahill (13-12) settled for his third career complete game, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out nine and walking three. The right-hander, who added a pair of RBIs at the plate, surrendered a two-run homer to Alfonso Soriano in the ninth.

Arizona put three runs up in the first inning on RBI hits from Hill, Upton and Jacobs to provide Cahill with all the support he would need. Hill added an RBI single in the second and Upton connected in the fifth, taking a first-pitch curveball into the second deck down the left field line for a two-run homer and a 6-0 cushion.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Upton has homered in back-to-back games for the second time this month. He has 17 blasts on the season. … David DeJesus, Brett Jackson and Luis Valbuena recorded the other hits off Cahill. DeJesus has hit safely in six of his last seven games. … Arizona 1B Paul Goldschmidt (back) missed his second straight game.
