Rookie Bryan Petersen belted a two-out homer in the bottom of the ninth inning and Javier Vazquez tossed a complete game in perhaps his last major league start as the Florida Marlins put an end to the Washington Nationals' bid of a winning season with a 3-2 victory Tuesday.

Petersen deposited an offering from Doug Slaten (0-2) into the seats in right field for his second homer of the season.

The blast made a winner out of Vazquez (13-11), who permitted two runs on five hits and struck out nine. The 35-year-old hurler has publicly admitted he is considering retirement.

Vazquez saw his consecutive scoreless innings streak end at 29 after Michael Morse belted his third homer in as many games in the fifth.

Washington (79-81) can no longer finish above .500 for the first time since the then-Montreal Expos ended the 2003 campaign with an 83-79 mark..

Emilio Bonifacio had a run-scoring sacrifice fly and scored on a wild pitch for Florida, which won for only the third time in nine games.
