Orlando Cabrera threw out Skip Schumaker at home plate in the ninth inning to give the Cincinnati Reds a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday.
The Reds led 4-2 in the top of the ninth before Schumaker collected his second RBI of the game with a one-out single off Francisco Cordero to drive in David Freese.
One out later, pinch-hitter Joe Mather doubled to left field and Schumaker attempted to score but was out by two steps at the plate thanks to Cabrera and the relay throw from Chris Heisey.
Reds rookie Mike Leake (4-0) allowed two runs on four hits and struck out five for the win. Cordero collected his 12th save despite the shaky ninth.
Drew Stubbs broke a 2-2 tie by hitting a two-run triple with two outs in the sixth inning to plate Scott Rolen and Jonny Gomes.
St. Louis ace Adam Wainwright (5-2) surrendered four runs on seven hits with six strikeouts in six innings.
Cardinals outfielder Colby Rasmus hit his seventh home run of the season in the third inning while Jonny Gomes belted his fourth dinger in the fourth for the Reds.
