Vazquez (7-7) allowed one run and three hits over seven innings. Joba Chamberlain pitched the eighth and Mariano Rivera finished up for his 19th save.

New York pitchers retired the final 15 Oakland hitters after Mark Ellis walked to lead off the fifth. Kevin Kouzamnoff’s fourth-inning single was the Athletics’ final hit of the game.

The Yankees scored twice in the second as Curtis Granderson tripled in one run and scored on Francisco Cervelli’s single to center.

The Athletics tallied in the third on Coco Crisp’s sacrifice fly but New York boosted the lead back to two runs on a sixth-inning homer by Mark Teixeira.

Oakland starter Ben Sheets (3-8) gave up three runs and eight hits in 7 1/3 innings.
