Matt LaPorta's leadoff homer in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Cleveland Indians a 7-6 win over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night.

LaPorta's homer came on a 1-0 pitch off Matt Guerrier (2-7).

Alexi Casilla's two-run single with one out in the top of the inning tied the game

A controversial call in the ninth inning briefly stopped the Twins' rally. After leadoff hitter J.J. Hardy singled off Chris Perez, pinch-hitter Jim Thome hit a long drive that hit off the top of the wall in left field. The hit was ruled a double, but Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire came out to argue the play should have been called a home run.

Three of the umpires left the field to look at the replay. They returned and ruled the ball didn't clear the wall and Thome still had a double. Gardenhire stormed out of the dugout and began a heated argument with first base umpire Gerry Davis.

After Denard Span struck out, Casilla, who drove in four runs, singled up the middle.

Perez (1-2) picked up the win despite failing to hold the lead. Indians starter Jeanmar Gomez held the Twins to one run in 5 1/3 innings.

Twins starter Francisco Liriano allowed four runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Shelley Duncan's two-run double was the big hit in Cleveland's three-run first. Trevor Crowe's fielder's choice scored the third run. Asdrubal Cabrera's RBI single in the second added another run. Shin-Soo Choo had RBI doubles in the sixth and eighth.

After Casilla's two-run double in the seventh, Jason Kubel hit a solo homer in the eighth.
