Armando Galarraga lost his perfect game with two outs in the ninth inning on a questionable call, but the Detroit Tigers held on for a 3-0 win over the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday.

Galarraga was one out away from the 21st perfect game in baseball history – and the second in a week -- when Jason Donald hit a chopper into the hole between first and second. Detroit first baseman Miguel Cabrera fielded it cleanly and flipped to Galarraga.

Replays confirmed Galarraga beat Donald to the bag by a full step, but first-base umpire Jim Joyce called Donald safe as the Tigers dugout erupted and 17,738 stunned fans booed in disgust.

Galarraga smiled in disbelief and Donald put his hands on his helmet, seemingly in disbelief as well. After Trevor Crowe bounced out in the next at-bat to end the game, the Tigers and manager Jim Leyland flooded the field and took turns barking at Joyce.

Indians starter Fausto Carmona (4-4) wasn’t perfect, but wasn’t bad. He allowed a solo homer to Cabrera in the second and a two-run single to Magglio Ordonez in the eighth, but otherwise matched Galarraga’s zeroes.

It was the third start of the season for Galarraga (2-1), but by far the most memorable of his career. He needed just 88 pitches for the complete game and threw a whopping 67 for strikes.
